Celebrating Heroes and Lifesavers: Red Cross Month in Connecticut

March is not just another month; it’s a time when the American Red Cross in Connecticut comes alive with its annual Red Cross Month celebration. This tradition, dating back to 1943, stands as a testament to honoring local heroes who ensure that no neighbor faces crises alone.

Red Cross Month is a national tradition that began in March 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first Red Cross Month proclamation — and each U.S. president has followed ever since.

As Richard Branigan, CEO of American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region, aptly puts it, “During Red Cross Month, we are proud to honor the people in our community who step up to support one another when help can’t wait during emergencies.”

During March, the Red Cross recognizes and appreciates local heroes, without whom the relief and hope brought to communities wouldn’t be possible.

Joining the Red Cross Month celebration is simple: visit redcross.org to make a financial donation, give blood, become a volunteer, or enroll in a lifesaving skills course.

Here is how the Red Cross made an impact in the past year:

  • Collected 127,00 donations of blood, platelets and blood products at over 3,800 blood drives.
  • Provided immediate assistance to nearly 3,035 people affected by around 780 local home fires.
  • Installed nearly 3,500 free smoke alarms in Connecticut communities, making over 1,400 households safer.
  • Taught over 61,400 people in First Aid/CPR/AED, water safety, babysitting and other essential lifesaving skills.
  • Extended support to over 1,600 members of the military, veterans and their families through emergency community and other services.

Be a part of the 10th Annual Giving Day! Today, Wednesday, March 27 we approach a day of profound impact and generosity: Red Cross Giving Day. This day is more than just a call to donate; it’s a movement that unites thousands of people to provide immediate assistance to families struck by disaster. When every second counts, the Red Cross ensures that help is not just on the way —it’s already there.

From offering shelter and food to providing emotional support and essential relief items, the Red Cross stands as a beacon of hope in times of crisis. On Giving Day, each contribution becomes a lifeline, ensuring that no one faces their darkest moments alone. Let’s come together and show that in times of heartbreak, compassion and action can bring light and recovery.
